San Jose SES GoogleDance 2007 and SketchUp

by byron white

Thanks Google,

Really enjoyed the latest GoogleDance spin off from the San Jose SES conference.

We had a great show, meeting up with lots of clients and prospects.

The highlight of the show was clearly the invitation to the Google Plex for an over-the-top corporate party hosted by Google.  From volleyball activity to 24 x 7 cafeteria to fantastic food to fine California wine to interesting discussion with the engineers to look-see into the workspace of the Google Employees, the event was really interesting and entertaining and exciting.

Matter of fact, we'll going to invite more clients to next year show in San Jose, and possibly host something special for clients as a sideline to the show. (Private Tour of Google if possible, before the dance?)

It was my first time to the valley, and you could really feel the calm buzz in the air.

I particularly enjoyed speaking with the engineers about some new Google Lab launches like SketchUp.  Brilliant!  I just moved into a new house and will try and sketch the house and the plans for the back yard that you guys can take a look at.... give me a month to figure it out and find a few minutes to have some fun with the tool!  You can actually grab my house with the technology and sketch it up with the 3d technology... like I said... Brilliant!

Next year... less engineer chat and more volleyball, and dancing with my wife that promises to come along!

If a tree falls in the forest

by byron white
9/7/2007 11:23:00 PM

"Hi Me.  Sorry I've not been posting lately.  I seemed to have gotton caught up in other me me me things."

Let's think about that post above.

Given blogging is all about my opinions, my take on things, my version of the story, why should I feel guilty about not blogging, if it's all about me!

The truth is that blogging is not all about me, it is all about being heard.  If you don't talk, people won't listen.  If you have great thoughts, people might listen.  If you have consistency in your thinking and posting on your blog, people might just latch on, and then you have a blog.

Now if people don't post and listen, is a blog a blog?  It's the old "if a tree falls in the forest and noone is around, does it make a noise" challenge.

OK, back to work on this sunny Saturday morning!  Count me back into blogging, sorry for the disappearing act.

Top 10 Interactive Media Conference Nuggets

by byron white
5/24/2007 10:06:00 AM

If your going to represent writers, it's important to understand them.  With that in mind, Melanie and I traveled to the Interactive Media annual conference this week.  Publishers, journalists and even citizen journalists gathered to discusss the issues, present that state of the union of the profession and map out the future of where the industry could go in light of the tidal wave of change taking place.  Below are a few nuggets I pulled away:

1.) The best way to predict the future is to invent it.
2.)  Producers (of content) must be consumers.
3.)  User generated content is here to stay, particularly when it comes to images, pictures and video.  In 2006, 850 million worldwide camera phones, expanding to 1.5 billion or 25% of the world population by 2010.
4.) Checking the facts seems to be where the line in the sand is drawn with citizen content vs professional content.
5.) The web has become Crapacopia according to Ze Frank.  Something for us all to think about.
6.) Mobile marketing must be explored and embraced quickly in the journalist world.  Look to The Palm Beach Post as examples of integration.  Text Plasma TV to 72727 and you'll pull ads from the pub that are offered to all advertisers.
7.) A few lessons on creating Ad campaigns from Andrew Latzman, VP of Research at Dynamic Logic a.) Bold Blast, with page takeovers, and bold executions.  b.)  Generate Dialogue with clear messages and interest items c.) Close the Deal with action oriented brand building deals and d.)  Be on the same page throughout the process, with the same language and flow of content, offers and brand.
8.) Flip.com.  Designed to become a holistic solution for marketing and engage teenage girls; Their inner world(creativity, self expression, imagination), social world(connectivity, belonging, validation) and outer world(reflection, information, inspiration) all come together with this brilliant model discussed by Sarah Chubb, President of CondeNet.  Amazing example of what the web can and should be doing.
9.) NBA mock draft by ESPN offers yet another enaging connection with sports fans.
10.)  The new toolset for journalists is photos, videos and interaction.  TestYourFaith.com is a good example of interaction that can be applied and viral.

Couple of questions I'd love to ask this crowd:
Is the interpretation of the story/event/news/content more important than the facts of the story itself?   In other worlds, Is storytelling more important than the story in todays day and age?
Is their a metric to measure the engagement of the interpretation of the story/event/news/content?

My final summary:  My Brain Battery is at a dangerously low level thanks to this show.  Please recharge the cells starting right now!

Face to Face: PMC

by byron white
5/11/2007 4:03:00 AM

I had a fantastic face to face meeting with the interactive marketing team of Parametric Technology on their campus in Needham Ma, not far from our office.  Great to have face to face meetings.  I really miss such meetings in the eWorld with most clients now scattered throughout the US.  Personal meetings offer the opportunity to truely dive into a clients business and surface with great solutions that offer the ROI they demand.  A facial expression seems to say a thousand words.  Not to mention the process for decision seems to be accelerated as information is clarified and the scope of the project seems more real and doable.

Matt's Link Spam Report Controversy

by byron white
4/20/2007 9:35:00 PM

Matt Cutts recent blog post on how to report paid links and the request for assistance from the SEO community with the reports created quite a fuss.  More than 400 posts quickly piled up.  The link debate in the SEO community is red hot.

Matt's Perspective (Perhaps)
> Natural links continue to be critical to Google's algo and success
> Evil SEO people continue to manipulate results at Google with link spam
> Help Google find link spam by submitting a link spam report

The SEO Community Response (Perhaps)
> All SEO's help clients achieve top listings with link building strategy
> Link acquisition without payment is unrealistic-- ie: directories, ect.
> Manipulation of the proposed "reporting" is inevitable, and sabotage is likely

Matt forces us all to think deeply about white hat link vs black hat link strategy.  Google does not want to destroy the SEO industry, at least not now, as Matt would loose lots of friends, and Google would loose the support of the Search Marketing Community (SEM and SEO firms) that generate the 98% of the Ad Revenue that keeps the boat afloat at Google.

The other good news that I see from this essentially contested post is that Matt may be hinting that the content on your site may soon become more valuable than the number of links pointing to your website.  SEM and SEO firms best jump on the content wagon(with quality content solutions from expert writers, not keyword rich crap that serves the spiders only), or they'll be out of business soon.

Link buying will continue to be standard practice and valued by Google in my opinion.  Successful companies on the web invest in quality content and link strategy-- paid and unpaid.  Grow or die as they say.  Grow quality content first perhaps, hoping the natural links will come. And grow link popularity(white hat) second, until Google announces that link popularity is no longer the driver of achieving top listings in the search engines.

Hugg.com
User submitted green news leaves you with hope that maybe there are enough people out their to make a difference, fight for the right cause and make the world a better place.

The Web Celeb 25

Paid Answers Service a No Go for LifeTips

by byron white
1/24/2007 3:07:00 PM

Like Google, LifeTips is pulling out of the paid-for-an answer service.  Unlike Google, we're pulling out before we beta the service.  Google concluded it was not a good fit for some reason, and we conclude the same for our own reasons.  The concept of charging our users anything at LifeTips was just not something we were comfortable with in the end.  As for Yahoo! and their answer service.... not something to hang your hat on quite yet.

This new may be a disappointment for Gurus that hoped to increase their earning at LifeTips with another revenue stream.  But in the end, a decision was made-- mostly based on philosophy.  Hope the Gurus understand that free seems appropriate these days.  This includes free for Gurus too-- free book publishing service... free promotion and exposure of your profile page to hundreds of clients now on board at LifeTips...... free editing and feedback on your content.

So onward in the free world we go.... brought to you by and supported by clients that value our content design and development solutions.

Happy Newish Year!

by byron white
1/13/2007 5:16:00 AM

LifeTips 2007 is off to a fast start.  I've spent the first few weeks of January with our design and development team creating and developing the new Business Solutions section of LifeTips.  We've officially rolled out 10 additional solutions to prospect clients and existing clients.  And the feedback so far has been fantastic.  LifeTips has moved beyond the two dimensional solution provider ( Sponsor/Link Program and Tip and Advice Center) , with 10 additional content design and development services.   I feel like we are "growing up" as a company now at the age of 7 years.  And it will be interesting to see if our retro print solultions catch on, as my career roots began in the graphic design and print industry.

Next on my list.... tweeking the Guru section of our website, including finally launching the $2.50 fee for questions with the help of Aaron and the development team.  We'll be paying writers $1.00 per answer when this interface launches finally.  And our writers-- Gurus we call them-- will turn on or turn off the ability to cash in and make the world better.

So stay tuned.  More launching in the next few weeks.  Feedback welcome and appreciated.

Chicago SES Show

by byron white
12/8/2006 1:37:00 AM

Fairly busy SES show in Chicago.  Fantastic location for our 10 x 20 booth right next to Google and MSN and TrueLocal.  The show floor attendee's seemed very interested in our content development solutions-- a nice alternative to the Search Marketing Companies that crowd the floor.  We had great feedback, and expect to do lots of business from the show.

The Yahoo Party on Monday night was a lot of fun.  Thanks Yahoo! Hats off to Stephanie in our office that got up on stage and sang along with the band.  She had the chance to plug LifeTips on stage-- Yahoo!

And thanks Jake Baillie and the team from TrueLocal. for a great part at B.L.U.E.S on tuesday night.  Lots of fun and fantastic band, led by a Jimmy Hendrix look and act alike.  Had a few flash backs of my Hendrix Black Light Poster by the end of the night.

I'll try and pop up some pic's or offer a link to some pic's from the show, or link to Jen or Steph's blog that showcases some of the fun.
